Originally from Marshall, Duane enlisted in the State Police in August 1989. After graduating from the 106th Trooper Recruit School, he was assigned to Caro Post #39. Subsequent assignments have been at SECID Thumb Narcotics Unit and Jonesville Post #19. In 2000, Duane was promoted to the rank of detective sergeant and assigned to Jackson Post #17 where he currently serves. Duane has served as a temporary staff instructor at the Training Academy, instructing for the 118th Trooper Recruit School. Departmentally, Duane has received advanced training as a Firearms Instructor and a Field Training Officer. He also serves as a member of the Jackson County Cold Case Team.

Duane's active involvement in the Troopers Association began in 1993 when he was elected as the Post Representative at the Caro Post. Duane was elected to the Executive Board in 2003 as the Region I Detective Sergeant Representative. Duane serves on the Finance Committee and the Constitution and By-Laws Committee. He is also the Association's alternate chairman of the Transfer Review Board. Additionally, he was a member of the Bargaining Team for the 2005-2008 contract. Duane has received advanced training in police officer rights.

Prior to enlisting in the State Police, Duane served Michigan's citizens in the Department of Corrections where he was a sergeant assigned to the State Prison at Southern Michigan (Jackson Central Complex).
