The MSPTA is an independently incorporated and autonomous police labor organization. We are a separate organization from other police labor groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police, the Police Officers Labor Council, and the Michigan Association of Police. The MSPTA is affiliated with the National Troopers Coalition and was a founding member of the Michigan Association of Police Organizations, which works politically on the state level. Even as an independent police labor organization, the MSPTA maintains strong ties to other police labor groups both on the state and national levels in an effort to work toward goals that benefit the entire law enforcement community.
Established under the umbrella of the MSPTA is the Michigan State Troopers Assistance Fund, a recognized 501(c)(3) charity by the Internal Revenue Service. The primary purpose of the Troopers Assistance Fund is its scholarship program which annually awards $20,000 in scholarship money to graduating high school seniors from across Michigan and is a contributor to other benevolent organizations. The MSPTA also organized and funded "Project Hang-Up" which opposes telephone solicitation by law enforcement groups.
