Originally from Ypsilanti, Mike enlisted in the State Police in August 1988. After graduating from the 104th Trooper Recruit School, he was assigned to Flint Post #35. Subsequent assignments have been at the Detroit Post #29 (Freeway), Northville Post #21, Bridgeport Post #37, and Brighton Post #12. While serving at the Brighton Post, Mike was temporarily assigned to the 1st District Criminal Interdiction Traffic Enforcement Team where he served as the officer in charge of the team. Departmentally, Mike has received advanced training as an Advanced Traffic Crash Investigator, Field Training Officer, and Defensive Tactics Instructor. In 2003, Mike was awarded the Michigan State Police Lifesaving Medal for saving the life of a 13 year old Livingston County youth who had attempted suicide. For that same event he was awarded the Livingston County Chapter of the American Red Cross's Law Enforcement Everyday Hero Award.
Mike's active involvement
in the Troopers Association started in 1993 when he was the Post Representative
at the Northville Post (now the Metro North Post). Mike was elected to the
Executive Board in 2000 as the 1st District Representative. In 2004 Mike was
elected as the Vice President and on July 1, 2006, he succeeded to Association
President upon the retirement of the then current president.
Besides the day to day representation of Association interests, Mike represents the Troopers Association on the Emergency Telephone Service Committee (ETSC), the statewide committee that oversees 911 in Michigan. Mike is also a gubernatorial appointee to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). MCOLES is the body that sets all law enforcement standards throughout Michigan. Regardless of the capacity in which he is serving, Mike has always taken a leadership role in representing the interests of the membership and the Association.
Mike has received extensive training in labor relations including police officer rights, police labor management, discipline and discharge law, labor law and labor arbitration, and police union management. He is a graduate of the Police Union Executive Leadership Program from Michigan State University's School of Labor & Industrial Relations. Mike also represents the membership in the discipline process as an Association Advocate.
Mike is actively in involved in the Michigan State Troopers Assistance Fund (MSTAF) where he serves as an advisor to the Board of Directors. Professionally, Mike is a member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers and the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association.
Prior to enlisting in
the State Police, Mike served in the United States Army for 7 ½ years.
He is a member of American Legion Post #235 in Brighton. He currently resides
in Brighton Township with his wife Kelly, and Mika their German Shepherd dog.
