Originally from Plymouth, Dick enlisted in the State Police in September 1972. After graduating from the 83rd Trooper Recruit School, he was assigned to Lansing Post #11. Subsequent assignments have been at 1st District Headquarters, East Lansing Criminal Investigation Division, and the Training Division. Dick also served two temporary assignments in Detroit prior to the formation of the permanent Detroit Post. In 1997, while assigned to the Training Division, Dick was promoted to sergeant. He continues to serve at the Training Division where he is the officer in charge of the First Aid Training Unit. Dick has twice been cited by the Michigan State Police for Lifesaving and Meritorious Service, as well as two Professional Excellence awards.
Dick's active involvement in the Troopers Association started in 1975 when he was elected as the Lansing Post Representative. Dick was first elected to the Executive Board in 1977 as the 1st District Representative. He presently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer and in 2006 served as Interim Vice President for six months. During his tenure on the Executive Board, Dick has represented Association interests in numerous areas including several contractual and ad-hoc labor-management boards and committees. Dick serves as the chairman of the State Police Retirement Board, a gubernatorial appointment that he has held since 2001. Dick is an Executive Board veteran. With the exception of a short absence, he has held an Executive Board position for over 26 years. This makes him the longest serving Board member in Association history.
Prior to enlisting in the State Police, Dick served in the United States Marine Corps. He has attended Lansing Community College. Dick is a member of the National Rifle Association as well as numerous hunting and outdoor organizations. He breeds and raises Large Munsterlander hunting dogs. Dick resides in Charlotte with his wife and family.
