First Lieutenant Arthur Green was killed in an airplane crash in Harbor Springs, Michigan, while en route to mandatory in service training. He was on official travel status when the Piper Cherokee he was piloting struck a large tree while on final approach to the Harbor Springs Municipal Airport shortly after 11:00 pm. He had taken off from the Detroit City Airport, approximately 270 miles away. The wreckage was located the following morning at approximately 7:30 am. Lieutenant Green served with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division for 19 years after retiring from the Detroit Police Department with 20 years of service. He also retired form the U.S. Air Force and the Michigan Air National Guard in 2004. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Cause of Death: Vehicle Pursuit
Date of Incident: December 7, 2014
Deputy Sheriff Grant Whitaker was killed in a vehicle crash during a pursuit on Dexter Trail, one mile east of Route 52, at approximately 2:00 am. Deputy Whitaker’s patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree during the pursuit, causing him to suffer fatal injuries. The vehicle he was pursuing continued to flee and the driver remains at large. Deputy Whitaker served with the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office for 1-1/2 years and had previously served with the Stockbridge Police Department. Police Officer Rodney Jones died while representing the Detroit Police Department during a police motorcycle training and skills competition event at the annual Bikes on the Bricks in Flint, Michigan. He was performing maneuvers on his department motorcycle on the 400 block of South Saginaw Street when he suddenly stopped it and fell to the ground. He was immediately treated by nearby paramedics and transferred to Hurley Medical Center, where he passed away. Officer Jones had served with the Detroit Police Department for 28 years. He is survived by his wife and son.

Cause of Death: Accidental Gunfire
Date of Incident: April 2, 2013
Police Officer Patrick Hill succumbed to an accidental gunshot wound sustained six months earlier following a high speed pursuit of a murder suspect. The vehicle they were pursuing was boxed into another police car at the intersection of Linwood and Hooker Street. The murder suspect immediately opened fire on officers from inside the vehicle wounding one officer. Other officers on the scene returned fire, killing the subject. It is believed that shrapnel from a shotgun pellet fired by another officer struck Officer Hill in the head. Another person in the vehicle attempted to flee on foot but was arrested. Officer Hill was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his wounds on October 19th, 2013. Officer Hill had served with the Detroit Police Department for 13 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.
